Dunes of Bouagarene - Southern Morocco 🇲🇦

Perhaps my favorite spot during my 10 day trip last month. The beautiful sand, the mesmerizing arid landscapes and the vastness of the Sahara desert, stretching out to infinity into Algeria, behind this magnificent dune.

I was maybe a kilometer away when I took this shot, hiking on an opposite ridge when I spotted my guide Abdou, out for a stroll in the dunes. Nice of him to appear for me in order provide some sense of scale.

European Bee-eaters hanging out.

A first species capture for me. To the best of my knowledge, these guys don’t make it as far north as Switzerland. A very colorful and photogenic family of birds.

Taken in southern Morocco last week during an exceptionally windy day - there was an enormous amount of sand in the air. As we passed through a fairly large number of bee-eaters I asked my guide to stop the jeep and I carefully stalked this group to within a respectable shooting distance. Much better than shooting through a windshield (ugh).

[wiki] The European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family, Meropidae. It breeds in southern Europe and in parts of north Africa and western Asia. It is strongly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa. This species occurs as a spring overshoot north of its range, with occasional breeding in northwest Europe.

Pillars near Tissint, Morocco 🇲🇦

Taken at 4:30am near a permanent tent camp close to Tissint, where an ancient river has carved out some magnificent rock formations in what can only be described as a miniature Grand Canyon.

The camp of maybe 10 tents is situated inside the canyon, surrounded by interesting rock formations such as the one pictured here.

This is a simple blend of only 2 exposures, sky and foreground. 1600 ISO, f/2, 60sec with Nikon Z7a. Foreground was painted slightly using a headlamp.

Camping at Tazlout, Morocco 🇲🇦

Well, most of my next posts will be from my recent Morocco trip. However, it will take some time to go through and process them since most of the night images will need to blended (foreground/sky), and for me this is pretty time consuming. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m proceeding chronologically, so this my first night camping April 1 at 4am, at 1300 meters altitude, just after crossing the Tazazert Pass, to the south of the high Atlas mountains.

Single image, with sky and foreground processed separately. 60 sec tracked, ISO 800, f/2 with Nikon Z7a and 20mm f/1.8 S lens.

Saying goodbye to Morocco early tomorrow. An unforgettable experience in the south, especially the vast expanse of the Sahara in the dunes.

Of course, my trip was planned around the new moon in dark skies (Bortle 1), and I was fortunate enough to have clear skies for all but one evening and the early mornings (milky way core best here at 4am). I will post more images when I have some time to process them. For now I’m looking forward to getting home to see the family. ❤️

Thanks especially to my extremely competent and friendly guides Abdou and Zaid, the cultural experience was equally fulfilling. Highly recommended if you have any inkling to visit this fabulous part of the world. 🇲🇦 🐫 🌙

Only about 70 minutes of exposure here, so I’m fairly happy with the results despite the noise. Modified camera to “see” the Ha, of course, but there’s very little saturation applied here.

Nikon Z7a + 280mm at f/4
~ 35 x 2min tracked exposures + darks + flats
